I am writing to you following my experience in Woolworths/Town Hall store yesterday evening Approx 5:30pm.
I was being served at a very busy time in Town Hall store. The man who was serving us went by the name of Simon.
I work in a Customer Facing/ Customer Service role, So I understand the importance of building a Rapport with Customers.
But somebody needs to get this Simon person to hold back, As he is in danger of upsetting people. When the store is as busy
as it was there is no time for a huge Rapport, A simple “hello” or “how are you” a “Please & Thank You” is more than sufficient.
It was my turn in the line after Simon was chatting away for FAR too long to the lady in front and a line of 5+ people was building up.
I said the simple “hello” and so did Simon.
Simon – Where’s that accent from??
Me – Dublin, Ireland
Simon – Oh right, Are you enjoying your stay in Australia so far?
Me – yes it great. We’ve only been here a couple of weeks. But yea its great.
Simon – I’d say the Weather is better, You’d better be careful with your skin.
You have the same Shitty skin as me. (At which point it became very awkward for me, my Girlfriend walks away disgusted)
Me- Ah I’ll be ok. Im looking forward to it.
Simon. Then mentioned something about Canada and his Grandparents being frim Scotland??? (which has absolutly NOTHING to do with me, and frankl I don’t bloody care.
Its Busy, its the end of the working day, i just want to buy the goods and leave, I dont want anyones life story.
I especiall don’t want any member of your staff commenting on my pale skin (which i am embarressed and very much self aware about) or any other Physical Attribute of mine or anyone else.
I am Irish , Pale skinned and a Tax Paying Migrant in this great country. But I am also affable and able to deal with a situation appropriately, thats why I am writing to you now and not causing a scene instore. My Girlfriend has vowed never to use your store again because of this and I would have many reservations myself. Simon….just get on with it and keep your trap shut.
I expect to be contacted back regarding this issue. I may actually call the complaint line also if I dont hear from a management rep.
