A man who identified himself as “Mr. Brown” with the “FBI” called numerous times to inform us that Winners International had been trying to contact us for three weeks to arrange delivery of a “package”. I specifically asked if he was with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and he claimed that he was. However, he declined to provice a first name or a telephone numer. He then transfered us to a “Mr. Washington” supposedly with the “BBB” who would give us all the details and arrange for delivery at 12:35 pm tomorrow.
He indicated that we had won $2,500,000.00 plus a new Mercedes plus a $450 bonus check and that we would have to come up with $450 to secure insurance on the car with GEICO and call Angela Torres of “Clarkville, Tennesy” to confirm the $450 had been paid. He insisted that was the correct spelling of the city and the state which are obviously incoprrect. He provided a 876 phone number and a “code” to use when contacting her.
While he was on the phone with my wife, I looked up Winners International online and found nothing but complaints and a BBB rating of “F”. We requested clarification regarding the whole thing which I thought was a scam from the beginning and informed him that we did not have $450. We requested his full name, address, and phone number, then he terminated the call.
My husband was phoned by Winner’s International yesterday. A “Jimmy Carter” told him he had won $2,500,000. Told him he had entered either a Publishers Clearing House or Reader’s Digest contest and also because he paid his bills on time and played the lottery, had won this prize. All he had to do was go to KMART and wire $50 to a a “Jamie Leslie” in Kingston, Jamaica W.I. Gave my husband a phone number to call back after he made the purchase (purchase had to be done within an hour).
Of course, before the hour was up, Jimmy Carter had phoned back to see if the wire had been completed. Needless to say, we knew it was a scam and my husband told him this on the second phone call. Jimmy became very belligerent and started shouting that my husband had lied to him (my goodness – - you think!!!). Would love to know how these people get phone numbers and names with contact info on them. We personally know someone who was taken in by a scam like this so please, please, please, be careful of nuts like this.
