You ever wonder why your dog gets anxious or acts scared to go to Petco grooming. It is because of what happens to them when leave. I know and it is horrible. I actually worked for Petco over a year ago. I worked in the grooming department and was horrified by what was happening. First things first the store was in fort Wayne, Indiana. If you have a dog do not go to Petco go anywhere else but there. If you care for your pet at all take it somewhere else. All the groomers except 1 were not certified They let all the bathers and so called groomers groom. They just said learn as you go . We had no idea what we were doing and we guessed are way through it.

We messed up so many dogs haircuts and then when the customer would notice the manager acted like it was already like that. One girl actually cut off a piece of a dogs ear and the store manager never even called the women back. Another one of the bathers cut off a dogs nail and part of his pad and when the pet parents got there he just said sorry the dog was fighting. The store manager basically told the lady the dog was bad and fought so we are not paying for any vet bills. The dog did not fight I know because I have groomed the dog myself and he is fine.

The groomer’s there are still not certified and when the hot water goes out instead of turning away customers they just do not tell you and wash your dog in freezing cold water. They leave the dogs shivering in kennel dryers in the back for hours before even attempting to dry them. One girl razor burns dogs so much that they actually bought her a special lotion for the dogs she does to minimize the appearance of the razor burn. Another girl tore a dogs tendon in its back leg trying to do the nails because they are not trained to do it properly. They say that we brush there teeth but they never have toothbrushes so they charge you and never do it.

Petco also does not have a proper flea shampoo so when customers come in with fleas and pay for a flea shampoo they are actually getting a regular moisturizing citrus shampoo. It does nothing for fleas. They do not clean after dogs with fleas and will put them next to customers dogs without fleas and infect them. They just don’t tell the owners but charge you. They take in dogs whoa re obviously are sick and should not be around other dogs ( including dogs with staff infection and Kennel cough) and house them next to other dogs!!! They do not disinfect any of the cages or equipment well enough to kill off these different infectious diseases.

Another girl had a yorkie come in and the parent needed a trim. The dog was a AKC Yorkshire Terrier with a beautiful long coat. The girl cut all the hair off and gave it a summer cut. The manager told the customer that it was her fault that she did not explain to the employee what she wanted a trim could mean anything!!!!These poor pet parents are being lied to and paying ridiculous amounts of money for a job that is being done by people who are not trained at all. These people are hurting animals and grooming under false certifications. The Store manger does not care. She just said do not tell them and they will never know.

I have never worked for a place more unprofessional. in my life. I am so glad I left there and I am glad that all my clients came with me. I just hope more people leave and go somewhere else. I would never let anyone I know take there pets to Petco grooming because I have seen first hand what happens to them when their pet parents leave.

That truly sounds like awful associates at that store, hopefully they get some new management and trained groomers there. However one bad petco doesn’t mean all petco stores and associates are not trained and professional. I am a petco groomer, while I am not certified on paper by a school I trained for five years under the guidance of an ipg certified master dog groomer. I have worked at petco for just under a year now and my salon and managers seem very professional and well trained. So my point is one bad petco doesn’t mean all petcos operate in the same manner. What did you do about these injustices you saw and experienced first hand?

Abby, I notified the main office but unfortunately nothing was ever done about it. That is why I left I could not stay there and be part of it. I do agree that 1 bad store does not make the rest bad. I am just speaking from experience with that store. They never sent one dog to the vet. When the ear was cut so badly they had the girl dump Quick stop in the open wound and hold it till it stopped bleeding it kept coming open and they finally called the pet parent 2 hours after it happened. They would not pay for her vet visit. One girl was using a 7 blade in the arm pit ( if she was trained properly this would have never happened.) She ripped open the arm pit. Blood gushed everywhere the dog needed immediate vet attention. They instead put it in a cage and tried to stop the bleeding themselves. They never called the parent but waited till she came to pick it up. Then the manager got ticked cause the lady wanted her to pay $250.00 for the vet visit.

I agree that not every PETCO is bad. That one sounds like it needs to be reformed. Normally there is a mentor program where “to be groomers” are sent to another store and learn how to groom from a person who goes through rigorous testing dogs that need to look picture perfect/ show perfect before they can even train anyone, and just looking for the right test dogs takes some time as well. My particular PETCO has groomers trained for 6months to a year before they are allowed back to their main store.
I’ve worked there for 3 years and we dusinfect every cage/ water bottle after every dog, and if there is an accident (normally only once or twice in a year, and normally a small snip of the end if the ear or hitting a wart) the manager and owner are called right away and dealt with professionally.
For those things you stated to have happened at that other store, someone should probably look into the training systems for employees because we gave NEVER had any of those problems and most definitely do not accept dogs with any open sores, cuts, or infections because the animals comfort and health is our main priority before taking a dog in.
