“A week ago we bought a pack of hot CROSS buns at Woolworths when I noticed it had the” halaal” – moon and star – printed on the packaging. I enquired by the manager why they have a “muslim emblem” on a product that bore a Christian emblem – the CROSS. As hot CROSS buns is in remembrance of the sacrifice of Christ at Easter I wanted to know if our CROSS had h…ow become “halaal” and if so if all Muslims now accept Christ as their saviour.

Of course she could not give me an answer and I really did not expect one from her. She then logged a query with Head Office to which we received a reply below.

On the day I think I was just trying to make a point, but hot CROSS buns is a traditional part of acknowledging the death of Christ on the CROSS on Good Friday which has been commercialised for profit by those that sell them. I feel that if you are making a profit out of my religious symbols and we as Christians allow it, then at least show the symbol the respect that it deserves. To me the “moon and star” a big symbol in Islam is trying to negate a Christian position.

Making your “buns” all inclusive without the CROSS I have no problem with, but making hot CROSS buns all inclusive by putting a “muslim symbol” on the packing is not possible because it does not mean or bear the same importance to everybody. While I understand that this is done for commercial reasons – profit – I feel that our Christian symbols should be treated with the respect and reverence it deserves and here it is not.

Am I once again being “controversial” or do I have a point. If you think I have a point please reply to Woolworth with the e-mail: custops@woolworths.co.za and complain when next you are in Woolworths.

Will like to hear your thoughts and Buy only Christian hot CROSS buns!!!!!!!!!

    Hello there!

What is it that matters most – buns or the packaging?

As long as you are satisfied with the quality of buns, why should you be bothered about packaging?

Also, the islamic symbol is only meant to acknowledge it to the muslim consumers that it is halal. By making such an issue of packaging, you are intentionally saying that any object bearing Christian symbol should/cannot bear symbol of any other religion. What if the symbol of the manufacturing company was a crescent and a star?

Lastly, you are so agitated by the presence of the symbol on the packaging, are you not bothered that the plastic in which it has been wrapped is being imported from Dubai – a theocratic orthodox islamic nation? (Just joking). Enjoy the buns and leave the buns out of this religious categorise. We have enough other issues for that.

  2. Um… you do realise that Easter is a Pagan celebration?

Nothing quite like hijacking a holiday and then complaining that you’re not getting what you’re supposed to. You might want to look into the origin of said “hot cross buns” and while you’re at it, the tradition of eggs, bunnies… well think you get it :)

The reason why the halaal logo appears on the package is to confirm to muslim consumers that the ingredience are halaal. Muslims buy and consume hot cross buns for the taste. The cross that appears on it is just a decoration to them. It has no significance to them. Muslims have accepted Jesus ever since his birth. He is known as “ESSA” in Islam . The differance is that Muslims believe in Jesus as the messenger of God and NOT the son of God. Muslims believe in the miraculous birth and assention. Muslims believe in the coming of ESSA (JESUS). -I am a muslim – I enjoy hot cross buns Essa was not nailed to a “” cross”"

The Cresant & a star is not just a symbol, infact the name halal itself is not just a name, it means it has been prayed (sacrificed) to their god for before leaving the manufacturer. The Bible forbids Christians on eating food sacrificed to god who is not God Jehovah, The Holy Father, so its not a good thing to put Islamic symbol on Christian symbolic product.

RESPONCE TO CONNIE..”……it means it has been prayed (sacrificed) to their god for before leaving the manufacturer.”

1.Christians, Muslims & Jews all pray to the same God. There is no such thing as ‘their god’ and our god.

    2. Many non- muslims prefer eating halaal food because its more healthier. The proceedure of sacrifice doesn’t allow blood clots to be trapped within the meat.

    3. Some products are labled halaal, not because they contain meat sacrificed by muslims but to confirm to muslims that there’s no meat ingredients in that product.

    4. Sacrifice in the name of God shows respect to God for allowing us to sacrifice his creation for food. Unlike an abortoir that chops of the animals head and thinks nothing of it.

…May God bless us all !

A cross on a currant and raisin bun doesnt makes the bun a Christian. Putting an Halaal symbol on it doesnt instantly make it a Muslim. Have you ever seen a bun in church? How would he pray? Or make Salaa? He cant be prostrate, he has no arms or legs!!
My comment is both as relevant and as idiotic as this entire debate. Im ashamed to have to share a country with people as narrow minded and hypersensitive as these indivuduals who felt it necessary to flood social media with their ‘complaints’

Islam means submission to the will of Allah and not any other being. Muslims only eats what Allah permit him. The symbol only indicate it is edible to muslim.

This goes to the one who posed the debate. There are so many thing to think about, one “Esus” (jesus) never died but he was raised to heaven therefore the cross and jesus is a myth and other. Please assess your Bible very well.
