On Saturday afternoon I switched over to the Disney channel for some easy watching. I was horrified while watching an episode of good luck Charlie (sun down part 2). The mother was wearing a fat suit and was under a bad curse, as if that message was not bad enough to send out to children it continued by having the family jump around her in a circle chanting “big and gross”. I was really surprised writers would even risk putting something like that into their show. I felt it was teaching children that bigger people should be made fun of and it’s something discusting or in their terms a “curse.”
My children over the last 6 months have gotten to the age that Dora and Backyardigans aren’t what they want (too babyish). So like most parents I thought Disney would be a safe go to, I was wrong. Now by no means is their recent behavior horrible or unfixable, but the negative change is noticable. There has been an increase in smart mouthed remarks that they think are funnybut I find disrespectful. My kindergartener asked if she looked fat, and started talking about “cute” boys.
The characters in the shows show little to no respect for their parents or any other adult, in fact the parents are hardly ever even present. If your children watch Disney shows I urge you to take note of the changes in their behavior and decide if Disney is the right choice for influential minds.
I work with children and see this type of attitude all the time….it’s heart breaking watching one child been picked on and excluded from fellow peers. Bring back the Raven days when healthy body self esteem was apart of shows.
