I am writing this for my daughter who is 8 1/2 and is in a power chair because she has an unknown muscular dystrophy. She is in a gen ed classroom and on standards so is not cognitively effected. This is what she told me to write:
“I am offended by Angus on ANT Farm being in a wheelchair not really having to be in a wheelchair. It’s not okay because you are teasing, making fun of people that NEED to have a wheelchair. Just because someone is lazy is not a good way to show someone in a wheelchair. Why not hire someone like me that actually NEEDS to be in a wheelchair on your show? It makes me really sad to see this, its hard to be in a wheelchair because I want to do what other people can do! Angus can walk and I think its wrong!!!”
As a mom it makes me really sad that an 8 year old can figure this out and the Disney Channel has decided to run with this on an episode for laughs. IT’S NOT FUNNY!!!!!! And it makes me angry that my daughter happened to view this idiotic decision of writers and producers. But sadly it doesn’t surprise me considering the rest of the programming they are running with.
